July 26, 2009Give me a home around the gum trees, with lots of plum trees...Is that how the song goes? I'm in Australia for the first time in 9 years. For the first time I almost feel as if I'm in a place I can call home. It's been such a long time since I've been in an English speaking country, and I don't even think I've been in a country I'm a citizen of for 4 years. I'm visiting a lot of old family friends. I talked for hours with some old family friends that my sister and I used to be really close with (well, as close as you can get to someone when you're 4 years old)
I'm taking lots of pictures, but I haven't brought my laptop with me here, so I can't really post <3

July 22, 2009Sex Ed Under The Bush AdministrationSo I was reading this from the Jezebel blog. One of the points it states is that according to a CDC study, teen pregnancy and STD transmission rose during Bush's time in the White House. In fact, the numbers had been in decline until he was elected. George Bush pushed funding for abstinence only sexual education, which I already think is ridiculous. That sort of education is dangerous and leaves people in the dark about things that they should know about how their bodies work and how they can keep themselves healthy. The stuff found in that report is pretty frightening stuff. Read it. "Abstinence-Only Curricula Contain Scientific Errors. In numerous instances, the abstinence-only curricula teach erroneous scientific information. One curriculum incorrectly lists exposure to sweat and tears as risk factors for HIV transmission. Another curriculum states that “twenty-four chromosomes from the mother and twenty-four chromosomes from the father join to create this new individual”; the correct number is 23." Seriously, how does this stuff even happen?
I wish I was articulate enough to portray how appalled I am with this.

July 9, 2009Panic Break UpOld news, but I am shaking.
Besides what all you you may think of them, Panic! at the Disco was a huge part of my life. They're the reason I joined Buzznet, the reason I have one of my best friends, and the reason that I made it through 7th grade.
When I first got into them I was an extremely depressed 12 year old. I was going through the whole "meaning of life" phase that we all go through. When I first heard them, I just liked them. I can't explain it, I just did. And suddenly had something to do, something I enjoyed, something that I could talk about. I joined Buzznet and wen through my whole fanigrl phase with them. I got someone who is now one of my best friends into them, and they basically marked a tie when my life started getting a lot better. Because of Buzznet I also picked up photography, which is now somehting I would honestly consider as a career choice. Without them I wouldn't have MCR, AFI, or any other of the music that has actually impacted my life and made me who I am. I don't like them as much. But still. Fuck.
I met them, I saw them in concert, I have an effin' signed album. My mum pushed through press photographers for me, they were my first fangirl band.

July 2, 2009Family Semi-FightWhat I love about writing anonymously is being able to write down these observations anonymously. What I'm about to write is the result of me needing to express my fustration with my family. Today my family got into a fight today, which I expected would happen several times since my sister's home and all. As usual, the topic was a stupid one, and it was my sister proposing the idea that we "plan" what are meals are like (note: being an expate in a developing country we have a cook, and for the past 11 years she's worked with us we've never micromanaged her work.) My mum being my mum, she took the suggestion personally and because of that totally missed the point and angle of what my sister was saying. The pointless arguement ensued (it is not worth quoting.) Classic family fight scenario: my dad doesn't say much becuase he's pretty anti-conflict, my sister tries to express a point but puts too much of a personal spin too it, my mum takes it personally anyway and then doesn't understand the way my sister is trying to angle her point, I tried to add to the "discussion" in the most objective and unbiased way possible. After the arguement had ended, my mum gets this bread stick and tips it in her tea, my sister then says "mmm, I bet that's delicious" which was completely out of hand in my opinion, and my mum then gets upset as personal taste was not the topic of the previous arguement. My sister then states that my mum had said something along the same lines of that earlier today (which she had.) Another thing to know to understand what happened next is that my sister is overweight. This is something my mum worries about daily because it's unhealthy for my sister and she feels bad because my sister feels bad about it. She also sometimes tends to make observations about the fact, which my sister before has gotten mad about before. My sister had been eating coco powder out of the container this morning, and my mum had said "Oh stop [that looks gross,] I feel sick watching you eat that." Of course, if you saw a friend/family member eating bitter tasteless powder in the spoonfulls you too would say the same thing. Of course, when my sister quoted my mum, thought my sister had meant it in the "Oh stop [you're already so fat,] I feel sick watching you eat that." way, and thought then got upset because she thought my sister was taking another personal hit about her weight (mind you, this has been made into an everday topic.) My mum then accused my sister of lying and walked out of the room. My family's ability to communicate with each other is appalling and what's irritating is that I can't fix it because I'm the youngest and therefore the baby. There have been similar fights involving miscommunications and I have spoken about this before. We could be a closer family if they would sometimes listen to my advice and take what I say seriously.

June 30, 2009China!So as I said I would, here is my journal about China.
The purpose of me going was to improve my Mandarin and my teacher said it would be good IB prep. The trip was great and a lot of fun and my Mandarin has improved immensely. What I loved about the trip was all the freedom we had. We lived in a dorm, where for most of the time we had to take care of breakfast and lunch and sometimes dinner by ourselves. When we had class, we had it from 9-12 and then there would be an afternon activity. The trip also completely screwed up all our sleeping schedules 1) Because the sun sets in Beijing this time of year at 8 2) We're on a school trip with limited supervision, who sleeps? However, we did make up for it by sleeping whenever we had free time (i.e. on the bus)
Most of my meals in the first week consisted of cup noodles. After that I actually went to the supermarket down the road and bought some tomatoes We visited and saw many famous landmarks and things (The Great Wall, Forbidden City, Beijing Opera) , a lot I had already been to but it was interesting nonetheless. One I hadn't been to was the Bejing Opera, which is literally normal speaking except that the actors whine and stretch the words. Even my teachers were making fun of it, 'twas good fun. My least favorite places were The Watercube and The Bird's Nest. The Watercube is currently not open to the public and therefore a waste of money, I feel. The funniest thing was that they were selling water for 10 yuan (about $1.25) which is ridiculous (they claimed it tasted better) The only qoute that made the place interesting was: "Go! Drink the water Michael Phelps swam in!" The Bird's Nest wasn't that great either, it looks cool but it's actually not that big either. We played frisbee in it though. By the middle of the second week we were all royally sick of Chinese food so a friend and I went to the supermarket again and we made spaghetti all by ourselves for 8 people *smug face*
In conclusion: I have the literary skill of an ant. Check out this gallery in the next few weeks to see the photos I took.

June 13, 2009MORE ON CHINAHaving loads of fun here, though I feel like I've been here forever.
The actual language classes are at a pretty good pace, plus the people here are really fun. It's cool having so much freedom regarding what we do too and all. I think that when I get back to Manila I'll spend an uber long time on a journal/gallery of stuff about the trip, just because the internet where I'm staying is really slow
